Infertility

Struggling to conceive can often feel overwhelming and isolating. Plano Women’s Healthcare physicians will be by your side, navigating you through this process as we seek answers together. We offer initial testing, evaluation, and treatment of various causes of infertility or recurrent miscarriage.

Defining Infertility and Recurrent Miscarriage

The current definition of infertility is the inability to become pregnant after one year or more of unprotected sex. However, for women 35 years old or older, the length of time decreases to 6 months since aging begins to diminish a woman’s chance of having a child. In addition, recurrent miscarriage is defined as experiencing at least two miscarriages.

If you are struggling with infertility or recurrent miscarriage, you are not alone. The World Health Organization recently estimated that between 48 million couples and 186 million individuals around the globe battle infertility. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 6% of married women between the ages of 15 and 44 struggle with infertility, and 12% of women within that same age bracket have trouble either getting pregnant or having a full-term pregnancy.

Types, Causes, and Solutions to Infertility

The causes of infertility vary widely, and what works for one person may not work for another. For example, what is causing infertility, how long a person has been infertile, and their age all play a crucial role in the treatment process. Anything affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus can cause a woman to be infertile. There are several leading causes of infertility:

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • Blocked Fallopian Tubes
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Polyps and Cysts

Some solutions used to treat infertility include minimally invasive procedures and intrauterine insemination. Nutrition, supplements, and various medications can also be used to treat infertility. For example, Clomid® impacts the pituitary gland and stimulates ovulation. It is often used in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Another medication, Femara®, can also encourage ovulation. Plano Women’s Healthcare also offers hCG ovulation trigger shots.

Additional Infertility Factors

Problems with infertility can be compounded by additional factors, including unhealthy habits like smoking or frequent alcohol consumption. Excessive weight gain or loss can also complicate infertility, as can extreme physical, mental, and emotional stress or trauma. In some cases, incredibly high stress levels may even cause women to miss their menstrual cycles.
