How long does the IUD and/or Nexplanon last? Can my device be removed early?

The length of time depends on the specific IUD or device type:

Liletta IUD has approval for 6 years.
Mirena IUD is approved for 7 years.
Kyleena is approved for 5 years.
Skyla and Nexplanon are good for 3 years.
Copper Paragard IUD is approved for 10 years.

Your provider will help you choose the correct device for your unique needs. Even though these devices are meant to last for years, if patients are unsatisfied with these devices or are ready to conceive, they can be removed at any time.

What should I expect at my IUD insertion appointment?

An IUD insertion is an in-office procedure and only takes about 5-10 minutes. It is normal to experience cramping and spotting in the days following the IUD insertion. If you are scheduled for an IUD insertion at our office and have questions, please do not hesitate to call our office for further guidance.

Are there non-hormonal birth control options?

While most birth control options are hormone-based, there are several non-hormonal options to consider. The Copper Paragard IUD is the most common non-hormonal method used, but it may cause heavier menstrual cycle bleeding. Other options aside from the IUD include the barrier method, Phexxi (new on the market), and tubal sterilization. If you are interested in non-hormonal methods and options, one of our highly skilled and knowledgeable OB/GYN providers would be happy to consult with you.

Can I get an IUD if I’ve never been pregnant?

Of course! The Skyla and Kyleena IUDs are specifically designed for patients with no prior pregnancies. The Mirena and Copper Paragard IUDs are also available for women who have never been pregnant. Our providers would be happy to guide you in answering your questions and helping you choose the best IUD option for your needs.

Do you offer IUDs and Nexplanon?

Absolutely! IUDs and Nexplanon (also known as LARCs – “long-acting reversible contraception) have become increasingly popular over the past 10 years for many reasons. They are highly effective with low failure rates, do not require the patient to remember to take a daily pill, have few side effects, and have high patient satisfaction ratings.

We carry many of these devices in-office, including the Nexplanon, Kyleena IUD, Mirena IUD, and Copper Paragard IUD. Liletta and Skyla IUDs are available upon request.
