What Should I Expect at My Fertility Evaluation Appointment?

Your OB/GYN provider will ask questions to obtain medical and surgical histories of you and your partner, pregnancy history, and menstrual cycle information.

From there, your provider will make recommendations on bloodwork, imaging (such as ultrasound), and further testing (such as semen analysis, sonohysterogram, or hysterosalpingogram).

Fertility Testing for Endometriosis & PCOS

In some women, endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to infertility. If our OB/GYNs suspect that these conditions may be contributing to your infertility, we can recommend testing to determine the cause and create a treatment plan.

Do You Assist Same-Sex Couples Trying to Conceive?

Of course! Our office is LBGTQ-friendly. We can offer female infertility evaluation testing along with intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm.

What is a Sonohysterogram?

A sonohysterogram involves fluid being inserted into the uterus through the cervix. This permits physicians to carefully study the uterine lining for scarring or other identifiable issues. Ultrasound images are collected for further analysis to help pinpoint the source of infertility.

What is a Hysterosalpingogram?

A hysterosalpingogram is an X-ray that allows physicians to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes. It helps identify the shape and size of the uterus, as well as if there is any blockage in the fallopian tubes. This information helps narrow down the source of infertility and assists our team in finding a solution.

When Will I Know the Results of My Fertility Evaluation?

Plano Women’s Healthcare will do our best to help you find answers as soon as possible. An average fertility evaluation may be completed in a few menstrual cycles.

At What Point Should My Partner and I Come in for an Evaluation?

If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for over 1 year with unprotected intercourse, an infertility evaluation is recommended.

If you are over 35 or have other conditions (e.g., PCOS, endometriosis), we recommend evaluating after 6 months of trying to conceive. If you are over the age of 40, we recommend consulting with your OB/GYN as soon as possible.

Despite these guidelines, if you ever have fertility questions or concerns, our team at Plano Women’s Healthcare welcomes fertility consultation appointments regardless of your age, the number of months you have been trying, etc.

What is the Impact of Age on Fertility?

The chance of conceiving declines as we get older and this decline gets steeper after the mid 30s.

By the time a woman is 40, the chance of becoming pregnant with each cycle is less than 10%. Though men also become less fertile with age, a man's age is much less of a factor in infertility than a woman's age.
