Is Robotic Hysterectomy an Outpatient Procedure?

Many patients want to know if minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, such as a hysterectomy, will allow them to go home the same day as their procedure. This is a valid question. No one wants to stay in a hospital longer than they have to and recovery at home feels so much better!

Typically, robotic and laparoscopic hysterectomies are outpatient procedures. Most patients are able to go home the same day or the very next day.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery?

These days our providers can perform the vast majority of procedures in a minimally invasive fashion. Your doctor will help you determine if you are a good candidate.

What Is the Recovery Time for Minimally Invasive Surgery?

After laparoscopic or robotic surgery – including hysterectomy – most patients can return to work within two weeks. If your job involves heavy lifting or manual labor, it may be four to six weeks until you can return to full work or activity. Most patients, even after a hysterectomy, report that they feel well just a few days after their surgery.

For hysteroscopic surgeries, recovery time is typically one to two days before patients can resume normal activity.

Note: After surgery, we recommend avoiding tampons and sexual activity until cleared by your medical provider.

What Is the Difference Between Robotic and Laparoscopic Surgery?

Robotic surgery is a type of laparoscopic surgery in which a robotic console is used to control the surgeon’s instruments. Robotic surgery has several advantages, including:

  • Greater ease of movement
  • Precision
  • 3D vision

Recovery time, incision sites and size, as well as blood loss are generally the same with robotic and traditional laparoscopic surgeries.

Robotic surgery can be a great option for patients undergoing hysterectomy, myomectomy, endometriosis surgery, and ovarian cystectomy. To learn more about robotic surgery, please visit: https://www.davincisurgery.com/procedures/gynecology-surgery.
