Vaginal Birth

In the majority of cases, vaginal birth is the safest option – as long as you don’t have any serious issues with pregnancy and labor. Typically, a vaginal birth results in:

  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Reducing the need to return to the hospital in the weeks following delivery
  • A better chance of breastfeeding right away
  • Faster recovery post-delivery
  • Reduced chance of medical issues with future pregnancies

Can You Ensure That You Have a Vaginal Birth?

While there is never 100% certainty with anything in life – including labor and delivery – there are some things you can do to increase your chances of having a safe vaginal birth. They include:

  • Ensure continuity of care during your pregnancy
  • Stay active during your pregnancy
  • Maintain a well-rounded diet
  • Attend birthing classes to learn about labor, delivery, and pain relief options
  • Have a good labor support system
  • Consider creating a birth plan and share it with your doctor
  • Create a calm, positive birth environment

Cesarean Section

Sometimes a c-section is needed for the health of the mom or the baby. Rest assured that your physician at Plano Women's Healthcare is able to make the best decision for you and your baby and if a c-section is indicated they will discuss this with you so that you can make an informed decision about your care. C-sections can have increased risks associated with them. These include:

  • Risk of infection
  • Longer recovery period
  • Breastfeeding might not be possible right away
  • Skin-to-skin contact might not be possible directly after delivery
  • It might not be possible to have vaginal deliveries in the future
  • Risk of future ectopic pregnancies, in which an embryo implants in the surgical scar
  • Higher risk of placenta previa in future pregnancies
  • Higher risk of scar tissue
  • Increased risk of respiratory issues for the baby
