The Use of Robotic Surgery and the da Vinci™ Surgery System

Robotic Surgery is one of several minimally invasive surgery options. For example, depending on your healthcare issue, robotic surgery can spare you large incisions that extend your recovery period. Instead, Robotic Surgery typically includes three or four tiny incisions. In fact, some patients who receive Robotic Surgery have an outpatient procedure, meaning they can go home the same day versus being kept overnight in the hospital for observation.

Plano Women’s Healthcare often uses Robotic Surgery with a state-of-the-art system known as the da Vinci™ Surgery System. This has yielded great results among our female patients. In essence, the da Vinci™ Surgery System utilizes the latest technology and robotic arms. The robotic arms can be used by the surgeon and offer more flexibility, precision, and dexterity than human hands.

The surgeon is seated at a surgeon console, where they can easily manipulate the robotic arms of the da Vinci™ Surgery System. The da Vinci™ Surgery System also uses a high-definition 3D camera so that the surgeon can easily see what they are doing and address any issues that may arise. This optimized visibility has greatly enhanced the surgical outcomes of our female patients who need Robotic Surgery.

The other two components of the da Vinci™ Surgery System are a patient-side cart and a vision cart. As its name indicates, the patient-side cart is close to the patient and has the instruments that are being manipulated by the surgeon at the surgeon console. Finally, the vision cart is what enables integrated communication and allows the surgical team to closely monitor the operation as it takes place.

Plano Women’s Healthcare has had great success and surgical outcomes using Robotic Surgery with the da Vinci™ Surgery System. For any questions concerning Robotic Surgery or to make an appointment, give us a call at 972-596-2470.

Additional Advantages of the da Vinci™ Surgery System

If the thought of Robotic Surgery seems a bit intimidating to you, you are not alone. However, there are multiple advantages to using the da Vinci™ Surgery System. First, the company that invented the da Vinci™ Surgery System was founded in the year 1995, giving them more than two decades of experience in robotic systems. To date, surgeons have used the da Vinci™ Surgery System in more than 7 million surgical procedures around the globe. The company, Intuitive, has a proven track record and continues to excel in the use of robotic surgical systems.

The high-definition 3D camera used does not just provide better visibility to surgeons, but it magnifies their capacity to see 10x more than what the human eye is able to detect. In addition to guiding a surgeon’s hand and offering more flexibility, precision, and dexterity, the robotic arms used have a built-in tremor-filtration technology that cannot be replicated in a human hand. Thus, the use of Robotic Surgery is in many ways safer than other more traditional methods of surgery, and its advantages extend far beyond an individual’s recovery period.

Obstetric and Gynecological Conditions Treated by Robotic Surgery

Plano Women’s Healthcare uses Robotic Surgery to help women who are experiencing Obstetric and Gynecological issues. This minimally invasive approach makes several small incisions to address and fix a variety of health problems. For example, Robotic Surgery can be used during a myomectomy to remove uterine fibroids while preserving the womb for future pregnancy.

Robotic Surgery can also be used to treat women who have endometriosis, need a hysterectomy, are experiencing uterine bleeding or prolapse, have an ectopic pregnancy, are battling infertility, incontinence, having pelvic pain from an organ prolapse, need their pelvic floor reconstructed, or have had their bladder prolapse.

Robotic Surgery Recovery Times and Outcomes

Because Robotic Surgery is minimally invasive and does not make one large cut that requires open surgery, patients experience a faster recovery period. It is also advantageous over laparoscopic surgery, which is minimally invasive but still requires the surgeon to use their hands. However, physicians at Plano Women’s Healthcare choose to use Robotic Surgery for other reasons as well.

For example, patients are less likely to experience complications in which they need to be readmitted to the hospital. The small incisions help minimize the risk of potential infection, as well as loss of blood during the surgery that might otherwise require a transfusion. The tiny incisions also heavily reduce the amount of scarring experienced by the patient. With the reduction in pain and discomfort, many patients are able to resume their daily activities within a relatively short amount of time, making Robotic Surgery an optimal choice for both the patient and physician.
