How Early Can You See My Baby on an Ultrasound?

Generally by the 6 week mark you can see a baby on ultrasound and reliably see the heartbeat by 7-8 weeks. This is why we schedule your first visit around 8 weeks to ensure we are able to confirm your pregnancy with confidence.

How Early Can You Determine the Sex of the Baby on an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound technology may reveal sex organs at 14 weeks of pregnancy but isn’t considered accurate until week 18.

How Many Times Do You Get an Ultrasound During Pregnancy?

Most patients undergo three ultrasounds during routine prenatal care.

  • First trimester: An ultrasound is done around weeks seven or eight to assess the fetal heartbeat and confirm the due date.
  • Second trimester: Around weeks 18 to 22, we will perform another ultrasound to evaluate for fetal anatomy.
  • Third trimester: At 34-36 weeks a final ultrasound is performed to confirm fetal growth and size, baby's position, and check the amniotic fluid levels.

What If I’m High-Risk? How Many Times Will I Need an Ultrasound?

Some women need more than the usual number of ultrasounds during their pregnancy. Reasons for this include (but are not limited to):

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Complications in a prior pregnancy
  • Pre-existing or gestational diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Concerns about fetal growth

The frequency of ultrasounds will be determined by the condition. NST (fetal non-stress test) and/or BPP (biophysical profile) may also be recommended and this testing is performed in our office as well.

We are experienced, knowledgeable, and trained in high-risk pregnancies. We will craft an individualized care plan – including ultrasound technology – to ensure the highest level of care for both you and your baby.

Do You Have Questions About Ultrasound Technology?
